A Lovely Day for Gardening in Willow Class What a beautiful day it was yesterday for gardening! Willow class were joined by Hazel class out at our new raised beds to weed out and prepare our beds for planting. Everyone loved using the new gardening equipment. We used trowels, shovels, wheelbarrows and our hands to get the beds all tidied up. We can't wait to start planting our seeds. The Forest School and Garden committee is working hard to get our seeds pre-planted in pots for each classroom. Then our next step is to layer our beds with topsoil and compost.
Willow class investigates how plants absorb water! We have been exploring all about plants and how they grow in Willow class. We are looking at Tulips and our class wanted to know; 'How do plants absorb the water they need to grow?'
We conducted an experiment to find out the answer. Check out it below! Experiment: How does a plant absorb the water it needs to grow? Materials: one cup of water and red food dye, one cup of water, two tulips
The red water tulip begins to show signs of red around the leaves, petals and stem. The tulip in just water is unchanged Conclusion: The red streaks in the tulip shows us that plants absorb water through vein-like tubes from the root of the plant to the top. This is how a plant feeds itself and helps itself to grow Tying our shoelaces! We were learning a simple procedure to tie our shoelaces.
Our Goal was; To Learn how to tie our shoelaces What we needed: shoes, laces Steps: 1. Hold each lace in between our pointing finger and thumb 2. Cross your laces to make an X. Pull the top lace through the rabbit hole you've made. Pull tightly 3. Make a rabbit ear with each lace, cross them over to make an X. 4. Pull the top rabbit ear through the rabbit hole and pull tightly. We know that by being persistent we can achieve of our goal! It's a busy week in Willow class this week, we are exploring and discussing Water Week. The school is expecting a very important visitor to see if will get our next Green flag- the Water Flag! We've been working hard to conserve water all year and this week we learning how important it is to all life.
Today we had a visit from some scientists from UCD who helped us complete lots of experiments and activities around how we use water, types of water and the importance of not polluting water. We even learned how much water we use! In art, we are exploring the beautiful ways in which water moves through poetry and painting. Tomorrow we'll be going on a water walk to demonstrate how far some boys and girls have to walk to find clean water.
Is brea linn an Gaeilge agus bhí an spoirt, is craic is spraoi an seachtain seo le haghaidh seactain na Gaeilge. We love Gaeilge in our class and it was a fun and exciting week for seactain na Gaeilge.
Ba mhaith linn a rá go raibh maith agaibh chuig ár thuismitheoirí cé a tháinig isteach le haighaidh an ceolchoirm Gaeilge. Tá suil againn go bhain sibh taitneamh as an dán a dhearna muid. We would like to say a big thank you to our parents who came in for the Gaeilge concert. We hope you enjoyed the poem we said. For those of you who couldn't make it, check out the video!
Rinnemar a lán rudaí le an seachtain spiesialta freisin. Bhíomar ag eisteacht leis na cailiní agus buachailí ón rang Rowan, bhí siad ag léamh amach leabhair Gaeilge a scríobh siad. Bhíomar ag cleachtadh le haghaidh an Ceilí mór amarach agus bhíomar ag deaneamh ealaín Gaeilge i rith an seactain. Bhíomar comh gnóthach!
We did lots of other things during this special week too. We were listening to the boys and girls from Rowan class who were reading out their Gaeilge books that they wrote. We were practising for the Ceilí (Irish dance) tomorrow and we made lots of Irish art. We were so busy! Willow class have had a really interesting tree week. We've been observing the tree surgeons at work at the front of our school to make our forest school safe. We also got to take a closer look at all the trees that were felled and count their rings to estimate their age. Next we did some bark rubbings for our art class, they created some amazing textures. We learned that trees do a very important job on our planet, they produce all the clean air that we breathe! We love our trees!
